The Angela Sheffield Conversation
Angela Sheffield serves as the Senior Director for AI at Raft, a digital consulting and engineering company focused on transforming the public sector.
Before joining Raft, Angie served as the Senior Program Manager for AI at the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
In that role, she led industry, academia, and the U.S. National Laboratories to accelerate development and adoption of data and AI technologies to detect and deter nuclear weapons proliferation and reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction.
Angie began her career as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Air Force, where she specialized in research, development, and technical intelligence. Following a distinguished career, Angie joined the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a senior scientist, where she led major basic and applied research initiatives to develop advanced data and AI techniques to counter terrorism and WMD. The approaches she pioneered, such as the use of AI to lower detection thresholds and reveal indicators and warnings in publicly available and nontraditional data sources, are now central to U.S. and international strategy to deter and reduce nuclear and WMD threats. An internationally recognized expert in AI for science, engineering, and national security, Angie was recently appointed as the first-ever subject matter expert to the Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board.
Angie graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a B.S. in Economics. She has an M.S. in Operations Research from Kansas State University and an M.S. in National Security and Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School at National Defense University.
